Life Lessons from a Band Geek

The things I learned in Marching Band had a profound effect on who I am today and how I approach Christianity.
And I have other sheep that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will listen to My voice; and they will become one flock, with one shepherd. John 10:16 NASB

It sounds crazy but, the things I learned in Marching Band had a profound effect on who I am today and how I approach Christianity. God's truth is eternal. When Christ said there are sheep of a different fold that hear His voice, I think He was referencing the fact that if your ear is searching for truth you will find God's truth in places you'd least expect. I've previously shared a few things I learned from Greek life that I thought I should have learned from Church. Today, I'm sharing what I learned from middle/high school band.

Summary of Lessons

  1. Look at problems from different angles and be willing to accept that you might have to take a different route
    I forgot to elaborate on why I told you the story of not being able to make a sound of the flute. From that experienced I learned two things: when a problem occurs, don't be afraid to take in all the evidence and look at the problem from a different angle; also, just because you can't do something the same way someone else does, doesn't mean you can't do it—take a different path
  2. When in doubt, leave it out (conditionally)
  3. Delayed gratification
  4. Have a winners mindset
  5. Early is on time, on time is late
  6. Leave a place better than you found it
  7. Let the things you love anchor you
  8. Keeping a code of loyalty and love
  9. Perspective is the key to harmony

Bible Verses

Below are the Biblical references I alluded to in the video
  • Sheep of a different fold -> John 10:16
  • 10 wise/foolish virgins -> Matthew 25

About

Author Image Author Image I love reading the Word of God. With prayer God's Word reveals so much: from comfort to temperance, from perspective to affirmation. Digging into the depths of the Word, cross-referencing history, language and time differences, is a passion of mine. In March of 2015 I decided to go back through the Bible doing an in depth study on each section I read. Eventually I decided to share my journal of notes as I partake in this journey. I hope you are blessed by God and inspired to pursue a deeper relationship with Him. I love reading and learning about God, nature, and science. I am interested in how it all connects. The Creator's fingerprints are all over his creation. We can learn so much about Him and how we came to be by exploring the world around us. Join me as I explore the world and draw closer to the One who created it all.
