Noah is a direct descendant of Seth, and the architect/constructor of the ark. His family is the only family to survive the flood. Noah has 3 sons who go on to repopulate the Earth, which makes Noah the father of all post-flood humans. Much of what we know about Noah is revealed through his obedience to God and his selection to survive the flood.
Disclaimer: No one knows what Noah looked like

Noah is a direct descendant of Seth, and the son of Lamech. He is described as a righteous man and because of his righteousness, he finds favor with God. Noah is told of God's plan to destroy the world in a flood and chooses to follow God's instructions to build the ark. It is likely that Noah was met with great opposition and assumed to be crazy but he trusted God and was rewarded. Noah's family was the only family to survive the flood; thus we are all descended from Noah.

Bible Verses

But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LordGenesis 6:8 KJV
By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.Hebrews 11:7 KJV

Other Verses on Noah

  • Genesis 6:8-10,13,18,22
  • Genesis 7:1,5-7,9,11,13-15,23
  • Genesis 8:1,6,11-13,15-18,20
  • Genesis 9:1,8-12,17-28
  • Genesis 10:1,32

In both the New and Old Testaments, Noah is portrayed and described as being righteous by virtue of having great faith. This is evidenced in his creation of the ark—Noah building an ark in anticipation of a flood when clouds haven't even formed in the sky would be like someone building a space battleship in anticipation of an alien invasion when we haven't discovered life on another planet. Never mind that majority of the people witnessing this would think these people are insane, the person building the contraption God as specified has to choose to trust God and focus their energy on God's work. Imagine Noah was a modern man, how long do you think it would take him to build an ark? How much would it cost? Would he have to keep his day job and work on the ark in his free time? Noah is a great illustration of dropping everything to do God's work. He trusted the message God gave him and didn't let the consequences of the world stop him from following God's command.

Noah's sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth go on to populate the world. All of mankind is thus descended from Noah.

Author Image Author Image I love reading the Word of God. With prayer God's Word reveals so much: from comfort to temperance, from perspective to affirmation. Digging into the depths of the Word, cross-referencing history, language and time differences, is a passion of mine. In March of 2015 I decided to go back through the Bible doing an in depth study on each section I read. Eventually I decided to share my journal of notes as I partake in this journey. I hope you are blessed by God and inspired to pursue a deeper relationship with Him. I love reading and learning about God, nature, and science. I am interested in how it all connects. The Creator's fingerprints are all over his creation. We can learn so much about Him and how we came to be by exploring the world around us. Join me as I explore the world and draw closer to the One who created it all.
