T oday marks the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month; it was started as Hispanic Heritage Week by President Lyndon Johnson in 1968 and expanded in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan. It starts on September 15 because that is Independence Day for many Latin American countries such as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua 1 .
