Why Does God Let Bad Things Happen?

Just because things aren't perfect on Earth, doesn't mean God doesn't exist. It doesn't mean He doesn't love us, and it doesn't mean He isn't watching out for us. Introduction Tuesday, I was all in my feelings about the mistrial in the Michael Slager case . I tried to make myself remember that only one of the twelve jurors seemed to think it was OK to shoot a fleeing man in the back, not once, but multiple times (side n… Read more »

Thou Shalt Not Kill

A look at the sixth commandment: thou shalt not kill. Introduction Thou shalt not kill. Exodus 20:13 KJV Possibly one of the most simply stated commandments is the sixth commandment. Murder is the second sin we are given witness to in the world. After the flood, God tells Noah that because man is created in God's image, if a man's blood is spilled, the man who spilled the blood must also have his blood spilled. Whoso sheddeth man's blood… Read more »

Lamech

Two Lamech's are introduced in the book of Genesis: one is a descendant of Cain and the other a descendant of Seth. Like the two Enochs, these men contrast similar to the original brothers. One commits murder, the other gives birth to and raises Noah. We We aren't given much detail about either, but their legacies speak for themselves. Introduction Two Lamech's are introduced in the book of Genesis: one is a descendant of Cain and the… Read more »

Cain

Cain was mankind's first murder, and the infamous son of Adam and Eve. We can actually learn a lot from Cain because his struggle with jealousy is something I think we all deal with at some point in life—hopefully we can learn from his mistake so we don't repeat it! Introduction Cain is the eldest son of Adam and Eve. Born sometime after they are expelled from the Garden of Eden, Cain is the first person to be "born in sin" meani… Read more »

Enoch

There are two Enoch's mentioned in Genesis (maybe even four): one is the son of Cain, the other is a descendant of Seth. When you hear "Enoch" you probably think of the one that was taken up to Heaven (the descendant of Seth). The contrast between these two men reflects the contrast between Cain and Seth, as well. Introduction Genesis introduces us to at least two different Enochs (Genesis 4:17 and 5:18), though some argue atlas fo… Read more »

Genesis 4 & 5: The Progeny of Adam

A review of the descendants of Adam leading to Noah, as well as the story of the first murder. Starting in the end of Genesis 4  and concluding at the end of Genesis 5 , the lineage of Adam and Eve is traced to Noah. One of the major concerns in the Old Testament is tracing the lineage of God's people. Whether it's to establish that all people come from Adam and Eve, the fulfillment of God's promis… Read more »

Genesis 4: Cain and Abel

Genesis 4 covers the first murder in human history—the cause and the consequences.  Some time after Adam and Eve are expelled from the Garden of Eden, they give birth to Cain and Abel. We are told that Cain becomes a tiller of the ground (or a farmer) and Abel a keeper of the flock (or a shepherd). Most of Genesis 4 centers on these two brothers. 1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have g… Read more »

Adam

Adam is both the first human and the first man to walk on Earth. God's creation of him is revealed in Genesis 1 and 2. The story of his life spans from the beginning of Genesis through Genesis 5. Adam marries Eve , and fathers at least three sons: Cain , Abel , and Seth . We all descend from him. Introduction Adam is both the first human and the first man to be created by God. His creation is told in Genesis 1 and 2 and the story of his life spans… Read more »
